How to Choose Kelantan Batik by Occasion

The question we hear most at our counter is not "which pattern is prettiest" but "what is this one for". The answer depends on two things: the fabric and the cut. This guide sorts the choices by occasion, using the fabrics and garments D'Rose Batik sells at Bazar Buluh Kubu, the craft market in Kota Bharu, Kelantan.

Three fabrics and how they differ

Before choosing by occasion, it helps to know the three main fabrics we work with:

• Cotton: absorbs sweat, washes easily and stands up to frequent wear. It creases more readily and needs ironing.
• Crepe silk: a finely textured surface that drapes softly on the body. Creases show less.
• Satin silk: smooth with a sheen, and colours look deeper. Best kept for functions rather than everyday wear.

Batik for the office

Office batik has to look neat, be worn often and survive a weekly wash. Cotton is the most practical. Pick a pattern that is not too dense, in two or three colours, so it pairs easily with dark trousers or a plain skirt.

For men, our cotton shirts come in long sleeve (sizes SS to 5XL) and short sleeve (XS to 4XL). Long sleeves suit meetings better. Malaysian civil servants are encouraged to wear batik on Thursdays, so many customers keep two or three cotton shirts in weekly rotation.

For women, a kurung moden in crepe looks more formal and needs less careful ironing than cotton. The baju kurung is the long tunic and skirt set that is everyday and formal wear for Malay women; the "moden" versions have a slimmer cut.

Batik for weddings and formal functions

For a function, the fabric matters more than the pattern. Crepe silk and satin silk hang well when sewn into a baju kurung or a shirt, and the colour reads richly under hall lighting.

If you have clothes tailored, a 4 metre length in crepe or satin silk is enough for one baju kurung. Our premium label, Madamme Rose Million Dots, is a 4 metre satin silk length. For men, a ready-made crepe silk shirt or a 2.5 metre crepe silk shirt length can be tailored to measure.

Batik for Hari Raya

Hari Raya, the Eid celebration at the end of Ramadan, means long hours in the same outfit, visiting one relative's house after another. Crepe is a common choice because it stays comfortable and does not crush after hours of sitting. We release a Raya collection of ready-made baju kurung every year.

For a matching family set, order early. We take custom orders for events and families, and the same cloth has to stretch to every member.

Batik for daily wear at home

At home, comfort wins. Cotton kaftans and loose-cut jubah (a long, full-length robe) slip on easily and handle frequent washing. For prayer, we carry several telekung series, the loose prayer garment worn by Muslim women, including Pastel Tulip and Pasteline.

Batik for travel

In a suitcase, crepe is easier to manage than cotton because fold lines show less. A crepe kaftan can be worn on the flight and straight on to dinner. Leave satin silk at home for long trips, as fold marks are more visible.

Caring for batik after the event

Whatever the occasion, hand wash batik with a mild detergent and dry it in the shade. We sell our own batik wash in two sizes.
